In 2016, Moomey was a Corporal with the Arkansas State Police Highway Patrol Division, assigned to Troop H and a seven-year veteran with the Highway Patrol. On August 8, 2016 while on duty, Trooper Roy Moomey risked his own life, trying to block a vehicle that was driving in the wrong direction down Interstate 40, so that it would not crash into two other vehicles. Dashcam video from Moomey’s patrol car shows how he tried to block the wrong-way driver with his patrol car, trying to prevent it from crashing into other vehicles. During this selfless and courageous act, Moomey was injured. After 3 months in the hospital, multiple surgeries, and a year of physical therapy, Moomey returned to work. He was awarded Trooper of the Year in 2016.
Moomey was promoted to Sargent and most recently was assigned as a special agent of the Criminal Investigation Division.
In 2022, Sgt. Moomey worked another wrong way accident on Interstate 40 near Mulberry, Arkansas where a drunk driver had crashed his pickup truck into several motorcycles, killing 3 people. Ray was the officer that had to tell a young teenage girl named Becca Godwin that both of her parents had died in the accident. Roy once again went “above and beyond” the call of duty, reaching out and helping the orphaned girl. He helped her get into the University of Alabama and helped her get her first car. Over Christmas break, her talked to her and realized that she was by herself. So he invited her to come and stay with his family during the next summer. Although Roy didn’t have enough rooms in his home, he set up a 5th wheel trailer where she could stay. Godwin is now married and considers Roy to be her Godfather.
Roy has also joined the Wounded Blue, a national organization with the mission to improve the lives of injured and disabled law enforcement officers.
Roy said that “each day is a lot more precious now.” We sincerely appreciate Roy Moomey continuing to go above and beyond the call of duty and we are proud to honor him as the 2026 Steel Horse Rally Unsung Hero.
Roy Moomey was nominated for the Unsung Hero honor by Betty Putnam-Free, a Steel Horse Rally volunteer from Lavaca, AR. A very special quilt was designed by Terri Linker with Quilts by Terri. A beautiful shadowbox was designed and donated by Steel Horse Rally Volunteer Misty Brown and Steel Horse Rally Board Member Dean Pendergrass and additional items were presented by Steel Horse Rally President Dennis Snow on behalf of the Steel Horse Rally.
